What is the Beauty Device Association?
The Beauty Device Association (BDA) is the collective voice for leading companies in the beauty device sector.
Founded in 2023, we’re an industry-led initiative representing the growing beauty device industry (encompassing products for skin rejuvenation, hair removal, and other state-of-the-art treatments).
We exist to promote innovation, ethical practice, and safety across the sector.
Our aims:
The BDA has four core aims:
-
End the sale of unsafe and ineffective beauty technologies
-
Expose and eliminate dishonest and unethical marketing practices
-
Establish stringent industry safety standards in line with global standard-setting bodies
-
Educate consumers, clinicians, and online influencers so they can make well-informed decisions about the brands they buy from or collaborate with
Realising industry growth potential
Estimates suggest the global at-home beauty device market may be worth $102.26 billion by 2032 (source: Zion Market Research, 2023). Yet most consumers still don’t know about beauty devices, and only a small minority have actually purchased one. Building awareness is key, but building trust is even more essential. To do that, ethical innovators must work together.
Combatting rogue retailers
Many consumers are sceptical about the efficacy and value of beauty devices. This is natural, and highlights the importance of clinical evidence, and transparent manufacturing and testing processes, for beauty device brands, especially as global regulation tightens.
Unfortunately, irresponsible and dishonest actors are becoming increasingly pervasive in the beauty device market. A growing group of unscrupulous online brands are:
-
Stealing before/after imagery from in-person clinics
-
Falsely presenting product promotions as impartial editorial content
-
Fabricating media coverage and endorsement
-
Already, 50% of consumers don’t believe claims made by at-home beauty device brands (source: PWC, December 2023). These unethical operators threaten to further fuel customer scepticism and undermine the reputation of the wider industry. Unchecked, they could turn the beauty device industry ugly.
The BDA is committed to identifying and reporting these rogue retailers, to protect consumers and protect the interests of reputable beauty device brands.
